For the Lost Ones

  • You were the first to put a sparkle in his eyes

And you must know that we were smitten too

It shouldn’t come as any great surprise

We were incomplete til he brought you

We watched as time turned laughter into tears

We hoped and prayed as parents often do

That your love would blossom through the years

But something stole his heart away from you

And it felt like we were casualties

In a war with unwritten rules

We bent to demands for loyalty

Couldn’t love him and still have you

    Maybe there’s forgiveness

Cuz we didn’t take a stand

    Maybe there’s redemption

For the in-laws in the land

Who failed to tell their children

Your divorce is not for us

Who failed to tell their children

You will not break us up

    So here I am remembering

The way things used to be

    The laughter and stories

    And missing you and me

Now my kids are happy and I love their mates - I do

But I still must let you know, dear, I’ll always love you too
