Runaway to Ruidoso

Merry Christmas from Write to the Heart of the Matter!

When my children were small, I tried to bring them when I could to Ruidoso, New Mexico for outdoor fun, especially at Christmas time. We would rent a little cabin and if there was snow on the ground –that was the best. Taking a walk outside, I’d listen to the sounds of muffled quiet and the soft whispers of wind through the tall pines. It was these memories that brought me to write the words to “Runaway to Ruidoso”. My gratitude today goes to those who took and ran with the idea and transformed it into a song that transcends what I could have anticipated.

  • Frost is on the windowpane

And I’m not sure we’ll be the same

    Since the family’s gathered here

The air is filled with Christmas cheer

The kids built a snowman today

    We’re finally on a holiday

It’s like we found our Christmas runaway

    In Ruidoso

    Runaway to the mountains

Where horses run wild and free

    Runaway in Ruidoso

    Time to make some memories

We’ll take a walk through old midtown

To jingle bells and Christmas sounds

We’ll take a horse and carriage ride

Then back to the cabin and fireside

I think we’re going to want to stay

A little longer on our holiday

And we’ll enjoy our Christmas runaway

    In Ruidoso

    Runaway to the mountains

Where ravens perch in white flocked trees

    Runaway in Ruidoso

    Time to make some memories

When we’re high among the clouds

    Worries melt and disappear

    And there’s a playful spirit

    That’s in the atmosphere

    I just want to be

Where the clouds are close to me

I just want to hear the snow

    In Ruidoso

    Runaway to the mountains

Where horses run wild and free

    Runaway in Ruidoso

    Time to make some memories

    (Repeat Last Chorus)
